Did you know that The Happy Meal is turning 40? Be sure to visit one of our McDonald’s locations as they’ve brought back some of the all-time favorite Happy Meal toys in the limited-edition Surprise Happy Meal!

McDonald’s Surprise Happy Meals celebrating the item’s 40th anniversary on the menu are launching across over 90 countries on November 7, offering 17 of the most popular throwback toys to accompany the meal in the U.S. The Washington Post writes that the campaign appeals to a sense of nostalgia for moms and dads who grew up coveting the 1980s McNugget Buddies, 1997 McNugget Buddies, 1995 Power Rangers, or 2013 Hello Kitty doll. “Parents tell us how fondly they recall their favorite toys,” McDonald’s SVP for Global Marketing Colin Mitchell said. “So, unboxing the Surprise Happy Meal together creates a real moment of bonding with their children.” The outlet adds that the company has also made significant progress in its efforts to respond to criticism over the healthiness of the Happy Meal, adding apple slices and lower sugar juices, reformulating its chocolate milk, reducing the size of fries, and removing cheeseburgers and soda as the default options. By 2022, McDonald’s plans for over half of Happy Meals to contain less than 650 mg sodium and fewer than 600 calories.
